Barclays operates in over 50 countries and employs more than 145,000 people worldwide. It participates in the UN Global Compact and was one of four banks involved in the drafting of the original Equator Principles. The Reassurance Network worked with Barclays on an interesting project to develop a new Code of Conduct on business ethics and launch a pioneering policy on human rights.
The assignment had many elements; it involved a multi-functional benchmarking process, focusing on industry leaders, as well as international best practice from other sectors, and then subsequently the development of a code for Barclays itself. We developed a code based on international standards and guidelines, Barclays own needs, and also the examples set by competitors and leaders in the field. It took into consideration the emerging United Nations Human Rights Norms for Business and Equator Principles. Finally, we worked with Barclays to ensure that both the code and policy could be supported by a management system that could effectively and efficiently integrate them into its core business practices.
