JTI is the international tobacco business of Japan Tobacco, the world's third largest tobacco company, with a global market share of 11%. It employs 23,000 people in over 40 countries and sells its brands in over 120 countries.
The Reassurance Network was approached by JTI in 2003 to help develop a code of conduct to guide its business behaviours globally. We surveyed awareness and compliance across the organisation, benchmarking standards and internal controls against best practice models, and holding a series of confidential interviews with managers across functions and regions. The results helped JTI to shape its compliance department. Since then we have carried out a number of pioneering programmes with JTI, including helping to set up an internal confidential hotline, recruiting and training compliance champions and developing a suite of multi-language e-learning courses around their code of conduct which has been used to train employees throughout its global operations.
In 2009, we performed a qualitative review of the effectiveness of the compliance department. This task was carried out with the Chief Compliance Office in order to adapt JTI's structure to the constant growing regulatory requirements and to combat illicit trade.
In 2012, we worked with Eukleia Training and Lipfriend Rodd international to deliver a suite of compliance training courses for JTI's international employees.
