The Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process is an initiative encouraged and formed by national governments, the Diamond Industry and various civil society groups.

The initiative was started in 2000 with the aim of eliminating 'conflict diamonds' from international diamond trade. The initiative now has 75 member states.

Effectively, the process is centred around The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS)- a certification that ensures a certain set of standards in the diamond mining and shipping process. The central means to achieving its goal are through national internal controls, transparency and data sharing.
