WRAP is an organisation that promotes lawful, humane and ethical manufacturing through a set of principles and a certification scheme. Essentially, the principles and ethos behind the organisation is very similar to many other standards (e.g. Ethical Trading Initiative, OECD Guidelines and the UN Global Compact), covering key issues such as labour rights, environmental responsibility, ethical practice and health and safety.
One specific difference with WRAP as opposed to the ETI, the OECD Guidelines and the UN Global Compact is that it is certifiable. The level of certification awarded is based on the degree of compliance and also vary in tenure from 6 months to 2 years. The certification is based on 12 clear principles and can be awarded only by recognised third party auditors.
Although not exclusively designed for the industry, the vast majority of the certified organisations are in the apparel and footwear sector. Within this sector it is widely recognised as an important certification and valued by many businesses in their sourcing criteria.
