The importance of effective health and safety management cannot be overstated. There are very few large companies that do not have a well-established safety management system with senior management accountabilities, policies, risk assessments and regular reviews. The implementation of such standards, combined with meticulous attention to detail and aggressive programmes of continuous improvement have had a dramatic effect on safety performance (lost-time injury frequency rates (LTIFR) are now commonly measured per million hours worked, rather than per 100,000 hours as traditionally calculated). Some of the most high-risk industries such as mining and oil and gas extraction are now amongst the safest, and LTIFR figures as low as 3.0 are not uncommon.
But, in our experience, companies often find that the reliance on safety management systems can only take them so far. The modern challenge for companies is to ingrain a culture of safety and risk awareness in all areas of their business to eliminate the minor injuries, caused by carelessness or unforeseen risks, that cost businesses dear.
At The Reassurance Network, we can assess the degree to which safety management is working and the extent to which it is ingrained; researching levels of awareness and understanding and making sure that safety is at the forefront of strategic and operational decisions.
