Dr Liu Kaiming

Dr Liu is the founder and Executive Director of The Institute of Contemporary Observation (ICO). Originally a lecturer and then a journalist, he has been involved in the research and development of CSR and workers labour rights in China since 1998. He is an expert on Chinese legislation, human rights, sociology and economy, and he has 8 publications on the relevant fields in Chinese, English and Finnish.

Dr Liu serves as a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council; a member of the International Advisory Board of the Business and Human Rights Resources Centre, affiliated with Amnesty International; and a member of Social Accountability International's advisory board. He is also one of founding members of Mekong Migrant Network, a regional NGO focussing on protection of migrants in theGreater Mekong River sub-region. Dr. Liu was recently consulted by Prof. John Ruggie, the former Special Representative of UN Secretary-general on Business and Human Rights, to input into the UN Framework:" Protect, Respect, Remedy".

He has engaged with multi-stakeholders in providing both CSR training and social auditing since 2001, when ICO was established, and has conducted more than 500 social audits and 30 social impact assessment projects in China, Cambodia, Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand.

Other work includes; providing CSR consulting and training services for worldwide brands such as Nike, Adidas, DEG, Burberry, Fuji-Xerox, Omron, Mizuno and Timberland, including the development of social criteria for supply chain management; implementation of a Labour Standards Training Programme for SMEs in 10 cities across China; participating in the global research projects of ILO, World Bank, and Oxfam International; and he is regularly asked to present worldwide for universities, governments, the UN, development agencies and international companies on labour issues in China. Dr Liu also sits on various advisory workshops to draft labour contract law and social security law and has played a key part in the positive development of workers rights in China.
